With so many Dungeons and Dragons classes on offer, weighing up what to play can feel like an impossible choice. It is with great pleasure and joy that I can introduce to you, The Bard!
The Bard is a versatile utility class that can make for an excellent addition to any adventuring party. Despite being considered a ‘joke’ class by some, the bards’ bad name is entirely undeserved. On top of being proficient spellcasters, the Bard is one of the most charismatic characters in the game.
Bards have one of the most diverse spell lists on offer, with both healing and damage spells available to them. Combine this with their subclass options, and they can fill nearly any role in the game. Want a rogue but with more spellcasting? Try college of whispers. Want to play a fighter that can verbal debate as well as a duel? Try college of swords. The versatility is endless.
I can say with no bias whatsoever that bards are one of the most fun classes to roleplay in the game. Their most important feature is their bardic inspiration. This feature allows you to straight-up give other players extra dice to roll during roleplay or combat. A well-timed bardic inspiration can be game-changing when it comes to those critical ability checks.
If you’re looking to make a basic bard, you want to start with Charisma as your highest stat, followed closely by dexterity. Sprinkle in some constitution for extra health and take the Vicious Mockery cantrip for flavour. You’ll be slinging spells and singing songs in no time.
