With so many classes to choose from, picking a class in Dungeons and Dragons can be a challenge in itself. D&D 101 aims to take out some of the guesswork by giving you a bite-sized intro to each of the classes available. For today’s class, we have the Druid.
The Druid is the nature-loving, tree-hugging, shapeshifting spellcaster of the D&D class system. They are a versatile spellcasting class that draws their power from mother earth. Many of their spells can affect their environment to their advantage and get the upper hand on the enemy. There are also many subclasses known as druid circles that allow you to customize based on whether you want more spells or shapeshifting.
The Druid class can be more difficult for beginners to learn at first. Many of their spells and abilities aren’t straightforward and require some careful reading and preparation on the players part. However, with a bit of imagination, the druids spell list and abilities can be truly devastating! You can, quite literally, bring a whole mountain of pain crashing down on your enemies.
On top of an extensive spell list, the Druid’s main feature is their ability to Wild Shape. With this, they can take the form of different creatures, with those creatures becoming more powerful as you level up. Druids maintain their intelligence and wisdom in these forms allowing them to concentrate on spells while changing shape. If you’ve ever wanted to be a giant snapping turtle calling down bolts of lightning from the sky, this class is for you.
To begin building your Druid, you will want your highest ability score to be wisdom, followed by either constitution for health or dexterity for the additional armour class. I’d recommend the Thorn Whip cantrip, then whatever spells and creatures suit your flavour.
