When it comes to grand fantasy worlds of swords and sorcery, a Monk is not the first thing you think of. Nevertheless, the Monk is one of the original Dungeons and Dragons classes, and boy do they pack a punch… literally!
The Monk is a fist swinging martial fighter that offers consistent damage, excellent defense, and fast feet to ensure that their punches get the job done. They have a unique feature known as ‘Ki’ that allows them to add extra effects to their attacks and skills, making them incredibly versatile. This class is perfect for those looking to create an agile warrior with a unique twist.
Like the other classes of D&D, you have a number of subclasses to choose from, for monks, these are known as Monastic Traditions. The tradition you choose can flavor the Ki abilities that you have access to. Want to do that “5 finger death punch” from Kill Bill? The “Way of the Open Hand” has you covered. Perhaps Jackie Chan films have you wanting some “Drunken Master” action, well, the drunken master monk subclass can fit that desire to the letter. They’ve got a Monastic Tradition for any Kung fu movie character you can think of!
To begin crafting your monk, Dexterity and Wisdom are going to be your priority attributes. I would also recommend some constitution to keep you alive on the front lines. Then, all that’s left is to clench your fists and punch away!
