Why Bin Off?
The Story Behind It All
Bin Off is a mix of my main two passions in life; gaming, and education. I’ve been a gamer for as long as I can remember – playing, making and living games. But I also recognise the value education has in our society.
Gaming has been making waves in education as a form of higher engagement. The concept is simple; if students struggle to engage with their school work, gamify the task and watch them play a game while also learning.
This approach is fully embraced by Bin Off, except I focus on the genuine gaming experience, and cram plenty of education in under the hood.
I call it ‘covert education’, whereby everyone is having fun playing a game, yet they end up learning something by the end of it all.
Gaming shouldn’t be restricted to high octane experiences and fantasy escapism. Gaming allows us to live in impossible worlds of fantasy, so why shouldn’t we use it to embrace all the possibilities of the reality already at our fingertips?
So why am I not making some big fancy waste sorting themed video game, where you’re running around as some kind of rubbish superhero? Because our world is vast, and no potential player should be excluded.
This is the beauty of card games. One person in a friend group can pick up a copy, bring it around to their mates’ place, and everyone can join in. Games bring us together, and with Bin Off, I want friends to gather around a table for their games night for a common good; making our planet a beautiful place.
I believe the potential for games as a crucial educational tool is far from fully realised, and I want Bin Off to push this trend higher. But I don’t want these games to shirk on the fun. At their core, games should be challenging, they should give us opportunities to get competitive with our friends, laugh, rage, cackle, despair… they can educate, but first and foremost, they should excite and engage.
